New Tribune owner has Santa Cruz ties

Sam Zell, the billionaire real estate mogul who has acquired the Tribune Co. in a deal valued at $8.2 billion, has a history in Santa Cruz.

Zell, chairman of Equity Lifestyle Properties Inc., fought a legal battle with the city over its rent-control ordinance at the De Anza Mobile Estates.

Zell is against rent control, and has argued that it results in millions of dollars in private subsidies for mobile-home residents.

The city gave up the fight in 2003, and said it could no longer afford the multimillion-dollar lawsuits against the park's Chicago-based owner, formerly known as Manufactured Homes Communities, Inc.

The City Council decided to move forward with a law that would eventually rescind rent control in all city mobile-home parks.

Uncle becomes weary, loving foster dad at 20

The 21-year-old has not been up all night partying, as men of his age are known to do. Democko works as a night janitor at Disneyland. As the sun rises, his second shift begins -- as Orange County's youngest foster parent.

His charges: three children, all younger than 5, one with severe disabilities.

They are the offspring of his twin sister, Jody, whom Democko describes as a sweet if wayward girl whose drug addiction, past prison time and whereabouts -- unknown -- make parenthood out of the question.

The children are wards of the state. Democko hopes they will not stay that way. With little experience, less support and almost no money, the rail-thin, dark-haired young man with a worried expression but a determinedly upbeat outlook wants to prove he is capable of being more than a foster parent.

Bayshore Recycling Earmarks $5.7 Million for Unprecedented Install ...

WOODBRIDGE, N.J. – April 19, 2007 – Bayshore Recycling Corp. has committed to purchase the largest solar panel system in the recycling industry to provide sustainable, non-polluting power at its recycling facility in the Keasbey section of Woodbridge, N.J., company officials announced today.

“With Earth Day upon us, it is vital for business to not only talk about ways to be environmentally-friendly, but to demonstrate what can be accomplished on a grand scale through natural technologies," said Valerie Montecalvo, president of Bayshore Recycling.

The company is investing $5.7 million for the 700-killowatt system, to be installed later this year. Energy generation from the solar panels will be used to power a majority of the company's operations, including the recycling of concrete, asphalt, brick and block.
