Nature's nightmare

HOLLY - Much of this small Southeastern Colorado town still had no electricity Thursday as residents began cleaning up the wreckage caused by a devastating tornado that killed a 29-year-old mother of two, destroyed at least five homes and damaged at least 50 more Wednesday night.

Homes in this town of about 1,000 people were reduced to splintered wood and mere bricks as the 600-foot-wide tornado - which came without warning - ripped a path through Holly, which is located about 4 miles west of the Kansas border on U.S. 50.

The tornado struck about 8 p.m. and yanked Rosemary Rosales, 29, and her 3-year-old daughter, Noelia Puga, from her husband's grasp as the twister shredded their modular home. Rosales and the child were flung into a nearby tree.

Rosales was flown by helicopter to Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs, but died of her injuries at about 5:30 a.m.

County to regulate rezoning requests

SNOW HILL -- Worcester County will appoint an administrative hearing officer to cut the number of cases requiring Board of Zoning Appeals approval and also regulate filing of rezoning applications.

At a special meeting Tuesday to review implementation of the county's comphrensive plan and update its zoning ordinance, county commissioners accepted a proposal by Edward A. Tudor, director of development review and permitting, to create the position within the department.

See's savoring its sweet success

Chances are, plenty of Easter baskets are still hanging around homes with the last chocolate eggs, chocolate bunnies and other sweets from See's Candies, a tradition in California households for 86 years.

But the South San Francisco chocolatier wants its treats to be known coast to coast, so See's continues its expansion. Distinguished by its 205 candy shops with black and white tile floors, workers in prim white uniforms and glass display cases neatly stocked with 100 varieties of the company's treats, See's expects to open more locations in states outside its California stronghold by year's end.

New stores going up in Nevada, Washington state, Hawaii and Utah will join a legion of permanent kiosks operating in 21 airports -- mainly in Western states, although one opened this month in Boston's Logan International.
